Yesterday (23/02/10) we had a school outing at Mellieha. Mellieha is half an hour trip from Marsaskala. Since we are on a small island, we consider it to be far away from our town! This town is very famous in Malta for its beautiful country views and for its fantastic beach. This beach is called Ghadira bay. We hope that you like the short slideshow posted above!

Dear friends in Marsaskala,
Last week we had one week holiday and this time we were lucky because we had a lot of snow and we also went on a trip to Predeal.
Predeal is a mountain resort in the Carpathian Mountains, 150 km from our village.
We posted some photos from our trip. Hope you’ll like them.
Greetings from Romania!

A Visit to Saint George’s Square in Valletta (Malta) (Pjazza San Gorg)
On the 11th of December some year 4 and year 5 children from St. Thomas More College in Marsaskala had the opportunity to visit the inauguration of the newly restorated Saint George’s Square. This square which is found in the heart of the capital city is famous for its cultural heritage. In this square there is the Maltese Parliamentary House of Representatives as well as State Apartments found in the President’s Palace which was built in the 16th century in the era of the Knights of St. John.
During this ceremony there were a lot of talent shows for children. Guided tours inside the Palace and around St. George’s Square were organised to inform all the students about the cultural and historical importance of this square. Various animations, parades and falconers were present during this ceremony to make it more attractive and motivating for our children.

A Visit to The Verdala Palace (Buskett Gardens, Malta)
An outing to Verdala Palace was organised by the school. Children in year 4 classes had a guided tour around the beautiful palace which is also very famous in Malta. It is the summer residence of our President and it was built in the era of the Knights of St. John. Beautiful scenes can be enjoyed from the upper balconies of this palace. Fieldwork activities as well as cultural activities were worked by children during this outing. During this outing children were shown traditional fruit that grows in the gardens of this palace. Different nut trees and citrus fruit trees were shown to the children. Information about a Traditional celebration dedicated to St. Martin was also given during the outing. It is a Maltese tradition to celebrate the feast of St. Martin that happens to be in autumn. It’s a tradition to believe that during this period of year the weather in Malta is beautiful because the feast of St. Martin is approaching. In fact we refer to the beginning of November as ‘SAJF TA’ SAN MARTIN’ or ‘SUMMER OF SAINT MARTIN’. Parents always prepare a sack filled with nuts and citrus fruit to give to their children during this period. This is a very old tradition and Maltese people often celebrate it with funfairs and exhibitions of local fruits grown in our fields.

A Visit to San Anton Gardens
Last Monday 21st December the year 4 children went on a cultural outing at San Anton Gardens. During this outing the children visited the various parts of these beautiful gardens with the help of a treasure hunt organised by ‘TraditionsMalta’. During this activity the children had the opportunity to visit an exhibition about different traditions in our country. The children enjoyed themselves during the treasure hunt. They had to follow direction given on a map of the gardens and thus they learned more about this beautiful locality in Malta. The children were divided in groups and the winner received a trophy. (see photos above)
